Tips for Enjoying “Black Friday”

No kidding…it can be done.

black-friday

When my kids were little, the day after Thanksgiving was the first day of the shopping adventure–that meant that Christmas was indeed coming, “goose is getting fat…” You know–the works. Each year, we would make some kind of wild deal with our husbands–to watch the kids and keep everyone alive and happy–until they saw us again. We made no promises as to when that would be.

My sister and I would venture out into the dark, cold pre-dawn with our newspapers and lists and chattering teeth, ready to find the Cabbage Patch Kid or the Batmobile, before they were gone for the season. It was wonderful stuff. We carried on like that for years.

It’s gotten a bit nuttier since those days, and while I do miss the excitement of mingling with others holiday lovers, standing in lines with mostly happy shoppers, and being served complimentary donuts and cider while waiting for the stores to open–I’m not so willing to camp outside Best Buy or wrestle someone to the floor over a Wii Fit. I just don’t want anything that badly. So, I’ll find a happy medium and go out a bit later in the day. I’ve found that things really calm down by the afternoon. And even though, I may miss the red-hot deal on Tickle-the-Planet Elmo # 17, I’m pretty sure it will be ok. We’ll find some pretty stuff and scurry back home and make a few more things. We’ll even share some with you in the next few days.

And, for all of you that live for the joy of this once a year event–here are some tips on how to make it all work–from start to finish…from writing the game plan to sleeping better when the day is done. Most importantly, have a good time–just relax and enjoy the hustle and bustle of the moment.

Stick a candy cane in your purse…it will help you remember who you are and what you’re really doing here.

I swear I asked a question about this, what did I do hit end instead of send! (The faster I go the behinder I get) Anyway, I really need to know – can you mix the essential oils with the salt and put it in one of those cute clear bags? Where to you get that kind of salt and the essential oils? Great idea for visiting teaching or friend gifts or for the women that really needs to be able to slow down long enough to soak her feet for a min. ME!

You can DEFINITELY mix it ahead of time. Just put the salt in a bowl (you can double, triple, or whatever to make a ton for lots of gifts at once) then put the oils in, stir it well to mix. If there’s enough moisture from the oil to make it clump a little, put it on a cookie sheet and let it dry. Then bag it up and voila!

You can buy essential oils and sea salt at any natural foods store. I know here in Orem you can find them at Good Earth, Real Foods Market, and Sunflower Market. I know there’s a Good Earth in Sandy. Probably Wild Oats (there are several in SL valley) too. If there’s a natural foods place/herb shop in Tooele, they might carry them too.
